Do you usually deal with the workload in the English Department at a steady and unhurried pace, with spare time to enjoy doing things you like? Or do you find there is not even enough time to study and prepare for exams and reports in the English Department, never mind participating in some extracurricular activities?
Today, living in a so competitive society, it is of great importance for young adults to develop interdisciplinary competencies. The concept is similar to the “π-shaped person” brought up by the renowned Japanese economist, Kenichi Ohmae (大前研一), referring to having more than one specialty in order to adapt to the fast-changing world.
For college students, having a double major or participating in extracurricular activities is helpful in developing other specialties and skills. However, you cannot simply throw yourself into a plethora of different courses or training without a plan. One key point to develop interdisciplinary competencies while not becoming overwhelmed and falling behind in your studies is to have a good time management.
Here, we present some time management skills introduced in Time Management Golden Rules (《時間管理黃金法則》) by Lu Chung-Hsin (呂宗昕), a professor at National Taiwan University, an expert about time management who has been invited and interviewed by several enterprises and magazines to impart his skills and knowledge.
We also present some interviews with two students in the English Department:
Jacqueline, a double major in German, who took part in the senior play, while modeling at Shi Chien University and tutoring in English in the last semester; and Jenny, with a Spanish minor, who held an English online tutoring job and led the Aerobic Exercise Club to give some advice about how English major students can balance their time to develop interdisciplinary competencies.
Simplify your tasks properly.
When there is a limit on time, cut down the to-do list to the most important ones and put aside those which are not so important. Go back to those less important tasks when you finish the ones that matter the most.
Prioritize your tasks based on “important to trivial,” “urgent to not urgent.”
Tasks that matter more are important; tasks on a tighter timeline to finish are urgent.
Arrange tasks from “important and urgent” to “important but not urgent” to “not important but urgent” and to “not important nor urgent” so that you will not find yourself missing deadlines because of some not-so-important business.
Minimize disturbance.
“I would recommend that the next club leader and officers do just one thing at one time and do not multitask,” said Jenny, who used to reply to her club officers immediately when they texted her even when she was doing her own assignments.
The less disturbance there is, the higher efficiency you will have to finish your work promptly.
You can either block out a period of time in a day that you will be disturbed the least or try to cut off all that could be a distraction to finish the most important tasks.
Have a complete / long time block.
Similar to the previous suggestion, to have a complete time block means to have a period of time that you can focus on your assignments or work without being interrupted.
What is different is that the emphasis is on “complete.”
For instance, Jenny told us that she usually wrote her essays on weekends or after school when she did not have other activities, and when she had a complete two to three hours to work on a task.
If your task requires a really long time to be done, you can divide the work into several sections.
Just make sure you do not stop in a way that interrupts your thoughts or planning.
Plan what to do a day before.
Both Jacqueline and Jenny talked about having a daily schedule.
Write down the to-do things and the approximate time they will take and arrange them in an order that suits you best. Then follow the schedule you have planned the day before. “I think it is important to have your own schedule,” Jacqueline added. Jenny, who also mentioned the use of different colors for different types of tasks on her schedule book to make her to-do list clearer, would even plan what to do a week in advance.
Keep good hours.
You should go to bed early and get up early to do your tasks rather than staying up and dozing off at your desk.
For Jenny, having enough sleep allows her to have a clear mind to finish her tasks. Waking up early, Jacqueline said she would have plenty of time before class, and there was no problem in lacking time.
Take a rest.
Do not overstrain yourself. Take a rest when you feel exhausted and go back to work full of energy. Also, having a day for relaxation once a week without doing or worrying about any of your homework so that you are more energetic and motivated to tackle those assignments on the following days is recommended.
Weigh your abilities and time.
If there happens to be an unexpected task, measure whether you are able to tackle it. If not, alter your schedule. For instance, when there was a presentation the next day, Jenny told us, she would not arrange other activities the day before, or at least went home a little bit earlier, to prepare for the next day’s work.
Likewise, before adding any task to your schedule, make sure you have time and are able to handle it; otherwise, you will be just adding the burden to yourself and people who get involved.
Control yourself.
This is highly emphasized. Self-control can be seen as the cornerstone of time management, particularly for those who are multitasking.
If you are planning to undertake a double major, minor, or any activity and training, or you are simply overwhelmed by lots of tasks-to-do, try these suggestions to help you be more adept in dealing with all your tasks.

How to Stop Procrastinating
by Melody Cheng
Procrastination is a normal phenomenon. For instance, I waited until the last minute to write this article, and I was still procrastinating during the writing process. I have to point out one thing: procrastination is near-universal. Interestingly, people have been procrastinating since the late 16th century.
If you google the origin of the word “procrastinate,” you will find that the word originate from the Latin word “procrastinatus.” The prefix “pro-” means “forward,” and “crastinus” means “belonging to tomorrow.”
Therefore, “procrastinate” literally means to put off things till the next day. Procrastination has a fairly long history, and it isn’t always bad. Nevertheless, we need to know how to deal with our procrastination habits before they cause bad consequences.
Why do people procrastinate?
One possible answer is that people procrastinate because they don’t want to do that task. According to the Longman Dictionary, the definition of procrastinate is “to delay doing something that you ought to do, usually because you do not want to do it.” It sounds reasonable. For example, I procrastinated when I needed to write a ten-page paper.
Still, why do people put off things that they ought to do? In the article “Psychologists Explain Why You Procrastinate — And How to Stop,” a procrastination researcher and clinical psychologist Alexander Rozental states that people procrastinate because of these four factors:
But some people may ask why we should stop procrastinating. David Ballard, head of the American Psychological Association’s Center for Organizational Excellence, claims that procrastination is not just simply avoiding or putting off a task.
“It also has to include an aspect that’s counterproductive, irrational or unnecessary,” says Ballard.
Moreover, in “Procrastination or ‘Intentional Delay’?” posted on the American Psychological Association website, Amy Novotney discusses the causes and consequences of procrastination.
Novotney provides a 2007 study result which examined procrastination among students in a health psychology class.
This study was conducted by Florida State University psychologists Dianne M. Tice, PhD, and Roy F. Baumeister, PhD. Tice and Baumeister found that procrastinators reported lower stress and fewer illnesses than non-procrastinators in the early semester. However, procrastinators later reported higher stress and more illnesses late in the semester.
From the study we know that procrastination causes high stress and illness because we delay too many things we ought to do. Those things will not automatically be done, so we accumulate stress and feel guilty about delaying.
Although procrastination is a normal phenomenon, we still need to have strategies to conquer it. If we can control our tendencies to procrastinate, we can probably eliminate some bad consequences.
TO STOP PROCRASTINATING, BELOW ARE SOME STEPS FOR COMBATTING THIS BAD HABIT:
Step 1: Set up a must-finish deadline
It is a good way to prevent causing bad consequences because of procrastination. All you have to do is set up a must-finish deadline before the real deadline. For instance, if I have a paper due next Friday, I will set my own deadline for next Tuesday so that I certainly won’t miss the real deadline. It is also a way to get into a good habit of finishing your task beforehand. Speaking of setting up deadlines, everyone should have a schedule book to record to-do lists and turn-in dates, especially those who tend to procrastinate.
Step 2: Plan a practical to-do list
It is not hard to schedule your life, and write a practical to-do list, right? In fact, it is easy to write a list. Nevertheless, it is extremely hard to stop adding to and revising that list. When you list everything you need to do, you can get overwhelmed by that long list. Therefore, it is important that you prioritize tasks that need to be done first, and never put off your tasks. For instance, if you plan to write a paper, you should break this task into small steps, like “find three sources,” “finish one paragraph,” and so on. These small steps lead to a specific list that you can finish on time.
Step 3: Set a small goal to start
You have already listed steps needed to finish a task. Then, you need to tell yourself that a small goal is enough. In other words, don’t think about finishing the whole paper, or you will want to procrastinate. You should convince yourself: just focus on writing a few lines of it, or just write for five minutes. Once you start with a small goal, you feel more able to move on and accomplish the task.
Step 4: Avoid any distractions
Before you start doing your task, you should make sure you put all distractions away. For instance, you should turn off your smart phone, turn off notifications on your computer, and so on. Some people think that there are too many distractions at home. If so, working in a quiet place like a library may be a good idea.
Step 5: Set rewards for yourself
The last step before you try to stop procrastinating is to set rewards for yourself. You can think of some rewards for achieving each small goal; for instance, you can get a drink after finishing one paragraph. The reward will become motivation for you to conquer the boring task. You can also set a big reward for accomplishing the entire task. For instance, I may tell myself that I can get a piece of cake after finishing this article.
If you google the origin of the word “procrastinate,” you will find that the word originate from the Latin word “procrastinatus.” The prefix “pro-” means “forward,” and “crastinus” means “belonging to tomorrow.”

Still, why do people put off things that they ought to do? In the article “Psychologists Explain Why You Procrastinate — And How to Stop,” a procrastination researcher and clinical psychologist Alexander Rozental states that people procrastinate because of these four factors:
- Value — People procrastinate because they do not find value associated with the task.
- Expectancy — People expect that they are not going to achieve the value which they are trying to achieve.
- Time — People feel like they cannot achieve the full value within the task at the specified time.
- Impulsivity — People tend to pursue what is more immediately interesting, so they procrastinate about the boring task which they ought to do.

Invasion of the Claw Machines
WATCH OUT FOR YOUR WALLET!
by Stanley Deng
photos by Stanley Deng
Last semester, when students came back from their summer vacations, they found some differences around campus. Yellow mechanical monsters woo away students’ pocket money with their lovely dolls, fancy watches, or even snacks. These monsters are claw machines.
In 2017, claw machines suddenly popped up on the street, and a new trend arose. Many people are obsessed with the charms of claw machines. Fu Jen Catholic University is not an exception; the students here are also surrounded by this crazy trend. More and more claw machines have been set up along Lane 514 and Jianguo 1st Road.
Moreover, they even replaced several popular food stores such as Patrick’s Fried Chicken. Some of them are combined with food stores, becoming a new commercial possibility. For instance, there is a claw machine in the fruit store called 果汁霸 at Lane 514. You can exchange a cup of juice with the fruit store owner if you get stuffed animals from that claw machine.
The magic of claw machines also went viral on the internet. Several YouTubers made tutorial videos and gave tips about getting your prey out of the claw machine. Several techniques were even invented to help players get their targets out of the claw machines. However, is the claw machine a temporary fad, or a new kind of business?
There are roughly about 30 claw machines around Fu Jen Catholic University. This number only includes the claw machines on Lane 514 and Jianguo 1st Road. There are even more of them around the campus. Claw machines are everywhere in Taiwan.
According to Taiwan News, “there are now 3,353 claw machine companies in Taiwan and more than 10,000 claw crane arcades have popped up, which is more than all the 7-Eleven and other convenience store chains combined in the country.”
Accordingly, the claw game business has become the biggest revenue source for the amusement tax in Taiwan since September 2018. Claw machines are not only a game for kids; they also successfully interest many teenagers and adults.
According to “Taiwan Is Obsessed with Claw Machines,” Ustik indicates that claw machine stalls have become popular spots for older teens and adults to hang out and have drinks. What are the charms of claw machines that let them gain such popularity in Taiwan?
From the players’ perspective, they may firstly be impressed or attracted by the cute stuffed animals in the claw machine. However, people will gradually get bored with the stuffed animals; moreover, not everyone is into stuffed animals or fluffy dolls. Nowadays, retailers of claw machines have become more and more creative. To attract consumers, the retailers come up with many creative and crazy ideas with their claw machines. Nowadays almost anything can be inside the claw machines. There could be snacks from Japan, creepy dolls, PS4, or even sex toys.
Ustik also mentions that, “While many of the machines house so many furry animals they look like a stuffed toy maximum security prison, many also house a variety of other, sometimes random, items, including light bulbs, face masks, aux cords… even vibrators.”
The owners of claw machines have come up with so many ways to attract customers. Since the business of claw machine has become more and more competitive, they have to make their own machine stand out. Therefore, these luring tricks mentioned above are invented.
▲ sex toys!? Is it even legal?
However, the claw machine is actually a gambling game. Before the players play, they will evaluate if the game is a profitable deal. It only costs 10 dollars to play each time. The players gamble that they will grab the things out before they spend above the actual price of that target. However, only a few of them can succeed.
As for a retailer, claw machines have become a new business. Many people own a claw machine to earn some extra money. In “Arcade Claw Machines: Turning Simple Game Into Business Opportunity,” Justin Su and Kuan-lin Liu note that “the arcade owner is responsible for setting up the infrastructure — renting out space, buying 26 to 30 arcade claw machines, and installing security cameras — all of which typically costs a little less than NTW$1 million.”
However, according to Su and Liu, with all 30 claw machines rent out, a retailer can make at least NT 15,000 per month. This means that the claw machine business could make profit in about 1 year. The low risk and the wave of claw machines in Taiwan has encouraged more and more people to invest. Though claw machines really sound like both a popular trend and a worthy deal for investors, some have started to worry about claw machine being a fad and losing their popularity in a short time.
According to Ms. Wong, who has owned a claw machine for about 2 years, she still has faith in this business. Her claw machine business still brings her profit every month. Though there are so many claw machines out there to compete with hers, she says that if you manage it well, you could still profit from it. Ms. Wong said that there are some obvious preferences for different players. If she puts in some snacks from Japan, the sales are better that month. Therefore, she suggests managing a claw machine fairly and with eye-catching products so that players will come and play.
Claw machines have already become part of the street scene in Taiwan. Whether you like it or not, it is both a trendy game and a potential commercial possibility worthy of learning and playing. Now, go grab a coin and start your claw machine journey!

Surprising Restaurants Ranking around Alley 514
by Ivy Lin
photos by Ivy Lin
In Alley 514, there is a wide variety of restaurants to draw foodies, and it is really hard for indecisive students to select which one they want to step into and have a great meal.
If you have been wondering which restaurant you should pick when your stomach rumbles with hunger, you should read on!
The ranking is based on the results of a respondent survey, and most of respondents are from the English Department of Fu Jen University.
Based on the information provided by the respondents, the third, most-recommended restaurant in Alley 514 is Syue Cheng Fondue.
This restaurant offers different kinds of vegetables, meats, and hot pot materials, and the customers are allowed to decide how spicy they want their food.
The flavorful fondue and the spicy, appetizing taste of it appeals many foodies.
Another advantage is that the customers can decide the amount of fondue ingredients they want to eat. Therefore, food-wasting is seldom a problem in this restaurant.
Next, the second most recommended restaurant in Alley 514 is Share Kitchen, which is located in the beginning of Alley 514.
One of the respondents commented that the food here is delicious, healthy, and delicate, and the beverages are amazing.
Share Kitchen offers a variety of dishes and provides everything that most customers expect to find.
They offer plenty of beloved cuisines, such as Japanese curried fried chicken, salted roasted mackerel, braised juicy beef brisket with special sauce, fruit salad with various sauces, and so on.
My favorite dish from Share Kitchen is the Japanese curried fried chicken, not only because its flavor is unique and distinctive but also because the meat is really tender.
Moreover, the appearance of the apple sparkling beverage is pretty appealing, and it suits the taste of the meal pretty well.
At last, the top recommended restaurant is Zheng-Xin cafeteria.
As you walk by Alley 514 during the lunch time, you frequently see many customers stand in line. A respondent says that Zheng-Xin cafeteria is the best place to have a meal for every FJU student, and this comment easily proved by randomly asking any FJU student.
On its big metal, self-serve table are various eye-catching, tasty dishes, and the cuisine smells really amazing.
If you want to have a balanced diet and have a meal with certain vegetables or meat, it is an undoubtedly great choice to have lunch there.
The meat dishes include chicken cutlet, fried cod steak, broiled chicken drumstick, broiled pork-chop, and three-cup chicken.
Also, Zheng-Xin cafeteria provides a variety of vegetables for starving students who want to eat healthier. Moreover, if the customers want to have a meal with some black tea or soup, they are able to get these for free here. The soup menu will change sometimes, but the only beverage offered there is black tea.
Apart from the top to the third recommended restaurants, there is another restaurant which also gets many votes from FJU English Department.
Do you have ideas about which restaurant it is? The answer is Red Beard.
When analyzing the results, I was pretty amazed by the answer since some of my friends have taught me that Red Beard is their last choice when choosing where to have lunch.
However, after seeing the short answers from the respondents, I am persuaded by them.
Compared to the pizza of Pizza Hut or Domino's Pizza, the price of the pizza in Red Beard is affordable and is really cheap.
Red Beard has extraordinary pizza, and it offers 27 delicious kinds.
What’s more, some of its combinations are creative since they are composed of two different kinds of ingredients that are seldom cooked together, such as blue berry pizza, beef ball with green pepper, anchovy with black olive, and so on.
One of the respondents stated that it is interesting to see the kiln outside the store, and the customers can witness the whole pizza-making process before the waiter takes the pizza to the customer.
